CorePlayer, a favorite amongst many Windows Mobile and other mobile platform users has been ported to the iPhone and iPod touch. CorePlayer offers media management to completely avoid using iTunes. An iPhone media player other than the iPod application could open doors to downloading MP3 files on the run through Seeqpod. Downloading files through Safari is possible with the Mobile Safari Download Plugin from iPhone hacker ‘hachu’. Not sure when it will be released, but they’re working on making it more iPhone friendly. Check the video after the cut for more a more in depth preview.

At CES 2008, Flytunes introduced a personalized digital music service for the iPhone, iPod touch and other media capable phones. Flytunes lets you access over 20,000 radio stations anywhere a WiFi, or cell phone signal is available; something satellite radio cannot do (inside buildings). Flytunes is available free of charge and can be run on either PC or Mac. Flytunes will be available on their website as of January 21st, 2008. Their website and pictures look bad, so we’ll have to wait and see how this service comes along in it’s final debut.

Bizarrely missing from the iPhone’s collection of talents is video recording, something most cellphone users take for granted. Of course, a manufacturer’s omission is the developer’s opportunity, and Polar Bear Farm is one such software house that has decided to take on the challenge of adding moving pictures to the cellphone. Their ShowTime app captures footage at six frames per second, 320 x 627 resolution, storing them in the iPhone’s internal memory.

Back in September developer MarkSpace promised iPhone adopters a new version of their synchronisation software, The Missing Sync, in order to transfer information from their BlackBerry, Palm or Windows Mobile handheld, and they’ve made good on their promise with the newly available client.

Looking quite a lot better than the thrown-together mockup David Sieger used to illustrate his theory of an upcoming iPod Touch-based MacBook tablet, possibly reviving the Newton name, this fan-made creation manages to capture the current state of Apple design. They’ve even developed the idea of an iMac style docking station into which an Apple sub-device would slot so as to allow access to full-sized peripherals.
“[T]he Keyboard Wireless Dock connects to the dock using Wireless USB. It also has a bigger hard drive, some sort of DVD player/burner, inputs for your USB and Firewire devices. The whole keyboard part itself is used as a large multitouch track pad. Since the keys need to be depressed when hit, you can do lighter touches as you move across the whole thing” Design’s creator
