Dear first-gen iPhone owner, how badly do you want MMS on your phone? Thanks to hacking community, now you can enjoy MMS capability on your original iPhone with default SMS/MMS app and O.S 3.0!

…here we are with a truly integrated MMS experience courtesy of the all-powerful hacking community. Granted, there have been MMS apps available for ages, but there’s a difference: this is the same action 3G and 3GS owners are getting in conjunction with OS 3.0, which Apple curiously decided to hold back from original iPhone owners.

A member of Hacking0sh forum revealed a tip on how MMS on 2G (OS 3.0) with default SMS/MMS app:

  • For install copy mms2g.deb to iphone in folder, for example /var/root
  • Then in same folder (/var/root) in terminal input: dpkg -i mms2g.deb
  • Reboot

or

  • Extract files from Patch.zip to iphone to folders same as arhive. For CommCenter chmod 755.
  • Reboot.

In settings, adjust apn, user, password.

it´s now on cydia: ActivateMMS2G

Thanks to an unaddressed security flaw, the iPhone Dev Team have announced that they will soon update their ultrasn0w unlocking tool to work on the iPhone 3GS.  The exploit, known as 24Kpwn, was first discovered in the iPod touch 2G, and used in the redsn0w tool to jailbreak that PMP.

Now, the Dev Team can use the same sort of technique as used in redsn0w to update ultrasn0w for Apple’s latest smartphone.  The team believe that the iPhone 3GS’ bootrom was finalized in roughly August 2008, so the emergence of 24Kpwn earlier in 2009 did not affect it.

The Team are now working on integrating the new technique into ultrasn0w, which they’ve warned will “take some time”.  Once that’s done, however, it will be possible to both jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.

Following the benchmark of 3D capabilities test where the iPhone 3GS is “close to four times faster than the 3G”; in JavaScript performance, the new iPhone 3GS also blows away its predecessors as well as rivals, even approaching MacBook speed!

sunspider-benchmarking-tests-2009-06-22Medialets ran the SunSpider test suite with Safari 4.0.1 on a 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo White MacBook (as a baseline for relative comparisons), Mobile Safari on the iPhone 3G with iPhone OS v2.2.1, Mobile Safari on the iPhone 3G with iPhone OS v3.0, Mobile Safari on the iPhone 3GS with iPhone OS v3.0, the “Browser” app on the T-Mobile G1 with Android OS v1.5 (Cupcake) and the “Web” app on the Palm Pre with Web OS v1.0.2

The results of the iPhone-based tests alone are rather astonishing and seem to indicate that many of Apple’s claims about the performance gains of their 3.0 OS and the iPhone 3GS may hold some water. Using OS 3.0 on the same iPhone 3G yields nearly 3X the JavaScript performance in Mobile Safari vs. using iPhone OS 2.2.1. The iPhone 3GS ups the ante by another factor of 3, bringing JavaScript performance on the iPhone 3GS to just 12X that of a full-powered desktop machine that has well over four times the raw processing muscle alone. The T-Mobile G1 running the “Cupcake” version of the Android OS completed the test suite in about 91 seconds. This makes it about a third faster than the iPhone 3G running Apple’s previous OS (2.2.1). The Palm Pre came storming out of the gate with speeds that closely rival the iPhone 3G running Apple’s latest iPhone OS.

For full details of the benchmark test, see Medialets’ summary of results.

Yeah. Dunkin’ Donuts have released Dunkin’ Run [iTunes link], a free app for the iPhone and iPod touch, allowing their customers to make group orders. “Do you and your friends need to fuel up with Dunkin’ Donuts coffee? Be the hero,” their companion website says.

dunkinrun_188Here’s how it works [taken from their website]:

  • Invite: Start a run at DunkinRun.com from your computer, mobile device, or our iPhone application . You are now “the runner”, and pick which friends you’d like to invite by providing their email or mobile phone number (no spaces or dashes e.g. 1234567890).
  • Order: Select what you want from the menu, and we’ll contact your friends and tell them to do the same.
  • Run: Go get the goods. We’ll compile all orders for you, and you can print it out or have it sent to your mobile device (if you print it, just hand the print out to the Dunkin’ crew member at the shop and they’ll take it from there).
  • Enjoy! Bring the goodies back, and enjoy the deliciousness, along with the hero worship from your friends.

With the release of iPhone 3.0 firmware, there is a possibility of iPhone and iPod Touch gaming accessories like virtual control pads, steering wheels and more, coming to our hand. Yes, because the iPod Touch software update page clearly mentions about “Third-party Game Accessories”!

iphonebuttons-here

There are lots of games out there, and a rising number of them are pretty good, but the iPhone / iPod has thus far been devoid of another major aspect of the game industry: Third-party peripherals.

June 19th can only mean one thing: it’s iPhone 3G S day. We’ve been in New York City this morning to check out the queues and crowds outside Apple’s 5th Avenue flagship store.

Apple-iPhone-3G-s-5th-ave-2-r3media

The lines may be less impressive than in previous years, but we’ve a feeling that’s down to many people pre-ordering for home delivery.  Apple changed their tactics for 2009, switching back to allowing individual iTunes activation at home rather than demanding buyers stop by an Apple or AT&T store.

Later on this morning we’ll be meeting with an Apple VP to discuss the launch and talk about what makes the iPhone 3G S special.  Plus we’ll have our own hands-on first impressions with the smartphone, together with live photos and video.  Keep reading iPhone Buzz!
